HYPERDRIVE DESIGN
A next-generation design philosophy for Bait (two-axis) reels, which significantly raises the standard of all fundamental performance characteristics with the aim of ensuring that high initial performance is sustained over the long term. The Hyper Drive Design comprises up to four technologies. It requires the incorporation of the HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR, which ensures smooth rotation over the long term, alongside HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT, which assists gear drive to deliver powerful yet effortless winding. The HYPER ARMED HOUSING provides robust internal structural support, making it resistant to flexing and distortion. The HYPER TOUGH CLUTCH features an insulated structure that ensures continuous operation even in harsh environments, whilst drastically reducing seizure caused by salt build-up. The synergistic effect of these features ensures consistently stable performance across all fishing environments.
HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR
A newly designed gear system engineered to ensure consistently strong and smooth rotation. This is DAIWA’s proprietary technology, which achieves long-lasting initial smoothness by increasing the meshing ratio without reducing the module (size) of the gear teeth—a factor directly linked to durability.
HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT
A drive support system that ensures sustained smoothness whilst delivering winding power with effortless reeling. By supporting both ends of the pinion gear with two ball bearings to ensure high precision, it does not dampen the input from the handle, enabling powerful yet effortless winding even under load.
HYPER ARMED HOUSING (AL)
A case system that firmly supports the internal structure with high rigidity and precision, delivering a refined winding feel and power. The use of metal for the frame—the core component—is essential, and its combination with the side plates and set plates ensures that the fundamental performance is maintained over the long term.
In this series, aluminium alloy is used for the frame, the gear-side side plate and the dial-side set plate. It features a full-metal housing design that delivers unrivalled strength and durability.
HYPER TOUGH CLUTCH
Not only does it offer crisp on-off performance capable of enduring thousands, even tens of thousands, of sliding cycles, but it is also a clutch system that experiences extremely few problems even in seawater with high salinity. Its cutting-edge insulation structure has already achieved a 99 per cent reduction in the number of repairs for seizing in harsh saltwater environments, compared to our previous models.
MAG-Z BOOST
The BOOST SYSTEM, which maximises the Long Casting performance of the MAGFORCE-Z.
MAG-Z Boost is a distance-focused setup that maximises the Long Casting performance of the MAGFORCE-Z to the absolute limit. Due to its design, which utilises centrifugal force to activate the inductor rotor, the MAGFORCE-Z is not suited to lightweight lures. On the other hand, it is ideal for Long Casting of medium and heavy lures, with casting distance increasing in direct proportion to the force applied. This is where the BOOST revolution comes in. By avoiding the Backlash zone and then instantly reverting one stage, it achieves maximum casting distance with a smooth, extended trajectory from the mid-cast right up to the moment of impact with the water.

TWS (T-WING SYSTEM)
TWS has succeeded in significantly reducing resistance at the line guide closest to the spool—the point where spool rotation speed is at its highest. By minimising resistance that impedes casting distance, it not only improves casting distance and control beyond previous levels, but also enables a faster fall and reduces Backlash. This realises a new level of line winding capability not only during reeling but also during the casting action.
UTD (Ultimate Tournament Drag)
DAIWA’s drag system eliminates the initial hesitation when the drag first engages, delivering smooth, consistent performance without any jerking, whilst also offering maximum Drag Force that increases the tighter it is set.
ZERO SHAFT
The spool is supported solely by the BB. The shaftless design eliminates all excess resistance, resulting in ideal spool rotation.

ZERO ADJUSTER
By first adjusting the ‘ZERO ADJUSTER’ and setting the ‘Spool Play Zero’ function, the evolution of the magnetic brake system now makes it possible to control all lures using the magnet dial alone.
The ‘ZERO ADJUSTER’ is a mechanism designed to ensure you can enjoy a comfortable fishing experience without any malfunctions whilst fishing, by adjusting it to the ‘zero setting’ before you start fishing.

G1 Duralumin Spool
G1 duralumin is a special aluminium-based alloy that offers twice the strength of magnesium and 1.3 times that of ultra-high-strength duralumin. This material, which maintains both ultra-lightweight properties and excellent rigidity, is the highest grade of lightweight alloy used in applications such as aircraft structural components and precision equipment. To achieve an overwhelming sense of lightness whilst maintaining the same strength, the spool’s line-winding surface is not blanked but simply thinned to a minimal thickness, yet still retains ample strength. The high rotational response afforded by its lightness, combined with the unparalleled precision of rotation resulting from its high rigidity, is unrivalled.

Immediately after its launch in December 2020, the ZILLION SV TW garnered praise for ‘clearly delivering greater casting distance than its predecessor’. Regarding its reeling feel, there has been widespread acclaim, with many describing it as ‘smooth and powerful’ and noting that ‘the reel provides more feedback’. It is a source of immense satisfaction for DAIWA’s reel development team that so many anglers have been able to experience the ‘SV-BOOST’ for distance and the ‘HYPERDRIVE DESIGN’ for reeling. Now, having been thoroughly put through its paces for up to a year since its launch, the ZILLION is beginning to demonstrate yet another of its true strengths: its ‘durability’.
As a physical object and a piece of machinery, a reel is inevitably subject to wear and tear. However, the ZILLION should not show any noticeable decline in performance after just one year of heavy use. HYPERDRIVE DESIGN is a ‘design philosophy aimed at ensuring that initial performance is maintained for a long time’. Its true value becomes apparent the more you use it.
Jun Maeda: ‘The amount of time I spend fishing in a single year, and the way I put my tackle through its paces, might well be equivalent to several years’ worth—or perhaps even a lifetime’s worth—for the average angler. Against this backdrop, I’ve deliberately been using the ZILLION SV TW without any maintenance or oiling since the winter of 2020. I’m doing this as part of my job as a tester, so please do make sure you look after your own tackle properly (laughs). But as for how the ZILLION is holding up now after being put through its paces without any maintenance, it’s given me no trouble whatsoever, and it feels almost exactly the same as when it was brand new. This ‘no change’ aspect is actually the biggest change since the 17 model, isn’t it?”

Compared to the G1 duralumin drive gear, which strikes a balance between durability and lightness, the high-strength brass drive gear offers enhanced strength and is designed to cope with power fishing. We had no hesitation in fitting this to the ZILLION TWHD1000. Its reliability when it really counts is second to none.
Uchiyama: “This reel… you’ve really gone too far (laughs). It was a 55cm fish weighing over 3kg that I’d finally hooked right in the mat cover, but with all that hard reeling and yanking, the fight was over in an instant. I’d been casting for a whole hour just to hook that Bass, so I really wanted to enjoy it a bit more! This reel’s absolutely no good!”

Uchiyama: ‘As I’m a “bank beater” (someone who specialises in targeting cover along the bank) who doesn’t even carry a fish finder in these times, the areas where I fish are naturally limited to shallow waters; even so, this reel gets plenty of use. As my style is mainly based on power fishing, it’s no exaggeration to say that I use it for absolutely every type of fishing. Whether it’s long, medium or short-distance casts, the drag engages reliably as long as you give the Rod a full swing. Whether it’s frogs, shallow Cranks, or strike-and-retrieve lures like Jigs and Texas rigs, the HD handles them all. If you want to switch between them for more comfortable fishing, I’d say the SV TW is best for spots where you use slightly lighter lures or do a lot of skipping, whilst the HD is best for spots involving heavy cover or where long casts are required. For those who can use the manual finger brake (thumbing), I’d love for you to enjoy ‘long-distance skipping’ with the HD MAG-Z BOOST. It feels brilliant, you know.”

Maeda: ‘My first impression of the ZILLION TW HD1000 was that I was “absolutely delighted”. I thought, “The specs I’d been eagerly awaiting have finally arrived.” I’ve always preferred the MAGFORCE-Z brake system, you see. Last year, with the addition of SV-BOOST, the ZILLION became much closer to the reel I’d been looking for. So I’ve actually been using it as my main reel for the past year. But… when I gave the Rod a proper whack with this ZILLION TW HD1000, I realised this is definitely the one for me. I prefer both the casting distance and the feel of the cast with this one. I like it even more than the original MAGFORCE-Z.”
I’m also delighted that the line capacity has increased. I like to do Long Casting with 18lb or 20lb line when fishing with reeling lures. As I mentioned in last year’s promotional video, with the ZILLION SV TW, the reel capacity felt a bit on the low side when using thicker line. In fact, it’s a reel that delivers such long casting distances that I’d end up running out of line when using deep-running crankbaits. Whilst the SV TW is an exceptionally well-designed all-rounder, for my big-lake style of fishing, it was ‘better’ rather than ‘best’. This HD model is the best.
As the HD currently comes in two gear ratios—7.1 and 8.1—it’ll probably become my main reel for worm-based techniques such as jigging, Texas rigging and heavy Carolina rigging. The 7.1 gear ratio also works well for slow-rolling spinnerbaits.
