The BLX Travel—a rod designed for ‘fishing your way around the world’ that fits in the boot of a compact SUV—is a travel rod developed with bass fishing in mind. Whilst portability is crucial for use whilst travelling, there is another key consideration: the fact that, whilst on the road, you’ll encounter a variety of fish species and unfamiliar situations that differ from your usual fishing grounds. To cope with these, the rod must offer versatility across different species and environments. In that sense, the C73H-5 is the iconic model of the BLX Travel range, offering enhanced portability and versatility; for me, it is an essential rod for ‘fishing my way around the world’. Although it is a substantial rod, it fits perfectly into the boot of my compact SUV here in Japan. Naturally, it also fits into a carry case or bag. It is a truly wonderful companion that gives me the feeling that ‘I can catch anything, anytime’. As for what I catch with this rod, first and foremost, of course, is Bass. Whether retrieving or casting, it handles all aspects of power fishing. As I’ll mention later, I feel that the tip’s sensitivity contributes significantly to the Lure’s manoeuvrability. As for other targets, it’s perfect for boat-based Sea Bass and rockfish, and on overseas expeditions, I can catch pike in Europe, barramundi in Australia, toman in South-East Asia, and peacock bass in South America.
Here’s an example of how the C73H-5 is used when fishing for red snapper with big baits. It’s been five years since I started targeting red snapper, and I’ve been using the C73H-5 for boat fishing ever since the testing phase. In terms of performance—power, durability and manoeuvrability—it is in no way inferior to a one-piece rod. The fact that a five-piece Travel rod can be crafted to such a high standard is a testament to DAIWA’s technical expertise. The lures I use for boat-based red snapper fishing are big baits weighing around 80g. The C64XH-5・SB is a model designed for bass fishing with swimbaits and big baits weighing up to 6oz (approx. 168g). Although it is a short rod at 6ft 4in, its regular taper bends so smoothly that you would never guess it is a 5-piece rod; combined with the benefits of X45 Full Shield and 3DX technology, it is also capable of long casts. Naturally, it excels at placing big baits precisely into target spots from short distances and applying subtle actions. The C64XH-5・SB features a blank with incredible power, whilst the guides are all double-foot and double-wrapped. Even when exerting the power required to effortlessly pierce the extra-thick double hooks on hollow frogs designed for snakehead fishing, there is no cause for concern regarding durability. After all, this Rod possesses the power and durability to land an 80cm-class snakehead with absolutely no difficulty. As is true of all BLX Travel models, whilst you’re fishing, you completely forget that this is a five-piece Rod. Despite having four joints, the fact that there’s absolutely no sense of discomfort is, in itself, somewhat surprising. In terms of strength, reassurance, finesse, sensitivity, weight and so on, I can’t tell the difference between this and a one-piece rod. It really is that superb. And yet, the packed-down length of the C64XH-5·SB is a mere 45 cm.
Take, for example, the journey home after a fishing trip in a mate’s car. You want to let your mate—who’s provided the car and done all the driving—get on with their own life as soon as possible! But asking them to drop you off at home would mean a detour of just under an hour, and you feel a bit bad about that!! That’s exactly the sort of situation I’m talking about. I previously competed for 15 years in France in a top-tier league where anglers vied for the longest total length catch of four species of predatory fish. Although I was originally under contract with DAIWA France, my encounter with the Japanese-model BL-XP led to my current involvement in the development of the BLX Travel. In France and across the EU, the usefulness of multi-piece rods has been recognised for some time. Whilst there are luggage restrictions when travelling by air, the biggest issue by far was lost luggage—specifically, the loss of checked-in bags. What I sought in the BLX Travel was a packed length of no more than 50 cm. This is a size that can be packed into hand luggage. With this, there’s no cause for concern. Furthermore, as there is a limit to the number of rods you can carry on fishing expeditions, versatility is essential. It must be a rod that can be used to its full potential not merely as a backup, but as your main rod. It is also important to have a range of rods that cover overlapping fishing styles; above all, the ability to handle a wide variety of fishing scenarios with a single rod, coupled with sufficient durability, is crucial. In remote, uninhabited areas, there is simply no substitute.

‘A Rod That Catches Fish’: Realising the Four Elements of Fishing – Ryo Imai
BLX Travel is a multi-piece model from BLX, based on the concept of a ‘rod that catches fish’.
The ‘U-shaped taper’ tip, which makes it easier to avoid snags, is designed to reduce stress for the angler whilst minimising pressure on the fish, allowing you to get closer to your catch. This enables not only delicate worm fishing but also slack-line reeling when using spinning lures. Furthermore, the powerful blank ensures a comfortable fight. The original BLX range comprises two series: the high-modulus SG and the medium-modulus LG. To enable a wider variety of fishing styles with a single rod, the BLX Travel adopts high-modulus carbon HVF Nano Plus, which sits midway between the two. Whilst high-modulus rods are typically considered at a disadvantage in terms of casting ease, the ‘S-shaped taper’ concentrates the bend at a single point between the third and fourth guides, thereby improving castability. Furthermore, all models are fitted with K-guides featuring stainless steel frames (bait models feature KW-frame guides with an all-double-foot specification) to ensure excellent rigidity and enhanced durability. Moreover, the selection of large-diameter rings means that the weight of the guides supports the rod’s flex during casting, resulting in even greater ease of casting. The guides’ own weight also plays a significant role during reeling. They bring out the feel of low- to medium-modulus rods—which, whilst highly elastic, do not pull the lure too hard—and the weight of the guides amplifies the tip’s movement once it begins to wobble, making it harder for the tip to settle. This transmits a soft, responsive feel to the angler’s hands, whilst the lure swims vividly underwater. Conversely, when fishing with worms, the rod fully demonstrates the characteristics unique to high-modulus construction. It delivers superb sensitivity when pausing or dragging the lure along the bottom, whilst the ‘U-shaped taper’ enhances manoeuvrability during subtle movements. In the world of bass rods, there is often a negative perception that performance deteriorates as the number of sections increases compared to a one-piece rod; however, there is absolutely no compromise in any aspect of ‘casting, enticing, hooking and landing’.
