The test took place on Miyako Island in Okinawa. ‘It’s on! It’s on!’ Kitamoto was the first to speak up. ‘It took the bait—a mackerel—before I’d even reached 100 metres. I let it take the bait properly before setting the hook, so it’s all good.’ He set the power lever to medium speed and began reeling in. ‘Wow… it’s easy to fish from a standing position. It’s incredibly light.’ ‘It looks like a decent size, but I can do the reeling really fast.’ The reel features a power lever on the right and an aluminium JOG lever on the left. Whatever the situation, instantaneous control ensures the fish never takes the upper hand. ‘We’re down to under 30 metres. This is where it really starts.’ The yellowfin tuna, with its extraordinary power and speed, tightened the line fiercely and ran, and ran. In response, the rod—the Mad Bypass—traces a supple arc whilst holding firm with tenacity. And with every passing moment, the ATD drag system—which automatically adjusts to match the fish’s pull, neither too tight nor too loose—gradually saps the stamina of the large yellowfin tuna. A 20kg-class yellowfin tuna surfaced on the cobalt-blue sea. ‘Wow, that’s incredible. To think I could land a yellowfin of this size so easily with this compact reel… it’s brilliant,’ said Kitamoto. Meanwhile, at the stern, Gohara called out, ‘I’ve got one here too!’ ‘As I’m holding the rod myself, the sensation of actually catching it is simply irresistible! Because it’s lightweight tackle, I can feel every single movement right at my fingertips.’ Although it’s a fight packed with thrills, it’s almost frightening how effortless the fishing seems—you’d never believe you’re battling a large yellowfin. ‘Even someone as petite and weak as me can handle this tackle with ease… It’s absolutely mad that I can enjoy such a big fight like this!’

In the spring of 2021, the long-awaited SEABORG 600MJ—a lightweight yet powerful electric reel ideal for live bait fishing for Big Ones at Zenzu—was launched. Whilst the SEABORG 800MJ’s power, drag function and durability had been proven at Zenzu since its launch, its weight of 1,770g posed a significant limitation for all-day hand-held use, much like a twin-axis manual reel.
The SEABORG 600MJ has been significantly lightened to 970g. In fact, it is even lighter than the SEABORG 500MJ, which weighs 980g. Whether performing baiting by hand or using electric or manual reeling, it can be done effortlessly and without strain. The maximum Drag Force is 28 kg (compared to 33 kg for the SEABORG 800MJ), and the maximum retrieval power is 112 kg. During a fishing trip aboard the Tobishima Maru in May 2021, I managed to land three Amberjack, the largest of which weighed 13.3 kg.
The distinctive feature—and the challenge—of Big One live-bait fishing at Zenzu is that it involves targeting relatively shallow rocky reefs at depths of around 30 to 80 metres. Even if you manage to hook a fish, if you let it take the upper hand, the bigger the fish, the quicker it will dash into the reef and escape.
The key is to adjust the drag whilst waiting for a bite, and then—once a bite is taken—to adapt the drag and reeling speed flexibly, taking into account the size and movements of the fish, as well as the topography and water depth of the spot, so that the fish does not run into the structure, the hook does not come out of its mouth, and you can successfully play the fish and bring it in.
With Big Ones in particular, the initial run immediately after the hookset is crucial. If you let out too much line at the start and allow the fish to take the upper hand, it will run into the structure. However, if the drag is set too tight at this stage, depending on where the hook is embedded, the fish may escape by avoiding the hook hole or tearing its mouth.
When waiting for a bite, set the drag so that the Main Line just about gives way when you pull it as hard as you can. As the Leader is usually No. 40 or larger, there is no need to set the drag too loosely. For fish up to about 5 kg, reel in firmly without letting out any line; for fish larger than that, set the drag so that the line gives way slightly. Do not tighten it completely.
Whenever I get a bite, even if the rod is set up on a rod rest, I always pick it up to judge the size of the fish by the weight I feel in my hands, the strength of the pull and the amount of Main Line being taken out. Its light weight of 970g enhances the manoeuvrability and responsiveness of the entire rig, so compared to the SEABORG 800MJ, I can concentrate on the fight without any stress, just as if I were fishing with a two-axis manual reel.
If you have a Rig system that’s sufficiently strong, it’s important to trust it and, during this initial contact, turn the fish firmly towards you to take control. Whilst the SEABORG 600MJ allows you to switch freely between Speed Mode and Power Mode even whilst fighting a fish, Speed Mode—with its manoeuvrability—is generally the best choice to start with. This is because, even when dealing with large fish, the speed and manoeuvrability required for reeling them in instantly and bringing them to the surface are crucial at the outset. Even if you’ve broken through the bottom and tightened the drag during the fight, I believe you should simply switch to Power Mode whenever you feel you need more power. However, if the fish is coming up in Speed Mode, I think it’s better to continue adjusting the drag and reeling speed instinctively—or rather, based on feel—to bring it in that way, as this reduces the risk of the shark getting away or of your line becoming tangled with others’.
In fact, if you watch my interactions with the fish in this video, you’ll see that I’m constantly adjusting the drag and the reeling speed. The SEABORG 600MJ/800MJ isn’t just about power; one of its key features is actually its superb drag system, which allows for precise and flexible adjustment.
The line capacity is 200 metres for PE No. 12, but in reality, including the Leader, it’s more like 170 metres. Given that PE No. 10 has a capacity of 250 metres and No. 8 has 300 metres, I think this line could be used for fishing for Groundbait Kihada in Sagami Bay, provided you can manage with a line length of around 230 metres.
Until now, electric reels have presented a dilemma: larger models offer plenty of power but are far too heavy, whilst compact ones lack power, have drags that slip, cannot be tightened properly, or struggle to retrieve line. The SEABORG 600MJ tackles this dilemma head-on, and you’ll find it’s a powerful electric reel that realistically allows you to fish using a hand-held standing rig all day long. I hope as many people as possible will use this reel at Zenjū and actively land that ultimate catch.

*The JAFS standard winding speed refers to the value measured at a supply voltage of 13V in accordance with the Japan Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association standards. It is the winding speed under no-load conditions at the outer diameter of the Spool.

*Regarding the power supply*
This electric reel is compatible with 12V to 16.8V direct current (DC). It cannot be used with power sources outside the specified range, such as 100V alternating current (AC) from a domestic mains supply or 24V DC from boat equipment. Furthermore, due to generators and wiring, the voltage of a boat power supply can easily become unstable, which may cause the reel’s protection circuit to activate, resulting in the reel stopping or rotating intermittently.
