AIRDRIVE DESIGN
The AIRDRIVE DESIGN is a next-generation spinning reel design philosophy that pursues the ability for anglers to manoeuvre Lures precisely as they wish. The AIRDRIVE DESIGN comprises up to four technologies. It requires the incorporation of an AIRDRIVE ROTOR, which ensures smooth reeling and produces highly responsive rotation, alongside a lightweight, trouble-free AIRDRIVE BAIL, a thin-walled AIRDRIVE SPOOL, which has been stripped of all unnecessary material to the absolute limit to achieve maximum lightness; and the AIRDRIVE SHAFT, which supports the main shaft with high-precision bushings and features a non-contact design with the pinion gear, enabling smooth, quiet reeling with minimal rotational noise even under heavy loads. The synergistic effect of these components, combined with improved weight balance within the reel, delivers a high level of manoeuvrability.
*The 23SALTIGA 4000/5000/6000 models are equipped with three features: the AIRDRIVE ROTOR, the AIRDRIVE BAIL and the AIRDRIVE SHAFT.
AIRDRIVE ROTOR
Based on our proprietary theory, we have devised a new shape that appears as though it has been cut directly from a sphere; by then thoroughly trimming away all unnecessary material, we have achieved a significant reduction in weight whilst maintaining rigidity. The ease of reeling has improved dramatically, leading to enhanced manoeuvrability and sensitivity.
AIRDRIVE BAIL
The AIRBAIL, which has traditionally utilised a hollow-pipe structure to provide rigidity and lightness, has been redesigned with a smaller diameter whilst maintaining the necessary strength, in order to achieve even greater weight reduction. The bail has been set at an optimal angle to ensure the line transitions more smoothly from the bail to the line roller. This delivers even greater lightness and trouble-free operation.
AIRDRIVE SHAFT
This system features a linear shaft with a non-contact design between the main shaft and the pinion, eliminating frictional resistance entirely; furthermore, by supporting both ends of the pinion with ball bearings, it maximises the conversion of input power into rotational force. In addition, by supporting the main shaft with high-precision collars, the system thoroughly reduces rotational noise.
MONOCOQUE BODY
Robust and durable technology: the MONOCOQUE BODY. Conventional spinning reels typically featured a design in which the drive gear was supported at both ends by the body and the body cover, and secured in place with several screws. Aiming to further improve precision and rigidity, the MONOCOQUE BODY eliminates the body cover and instead secures a high-precision plate directly to the body by screwing it in. This has enhanced the precision with which the gears are supported, whilst also improving rigidity and airtightness. Furthermore, by utilising the space previously occupied by screws, we have succeeded in maximising the size of the drive gear to the absolute limit. The term ‘MONOCOQUE BODY’ derives from ‘MONO’ (one) and ‘COQUE’ (shell). This entirely new design, symbolising the resilience of a single-piece shell, shatters conventional wisdom regarding reel construction.
MAGSEALED
DAIWA’s unique waterproof design creates a barrier of magnetic oil between the body and the rotor to prevent the ingress of seawater, dust and other contaminants.
*On the 23SALTIGA 4000/5000/6000 models, this technology is fitted at three locations: both ends of the Drive Gear, the pinion gear section and the Line Roller (Full MAGSEALED specification). This further enhances water resistance, durability and rotational performance, achieving the highest level of water resistance available in spinning reels.
MAGSEALED BALL BEARING
Using its proprietary technology, DAIWA has succeeded in becoming the first in the world to apply MAGSEALED technology to the ball bearing itself. A wall of magnetic fluid prevents water and foreign particles from entering the interior of the ball bearing, thereby significantly reducing rust, salt deposits and abnormal noises whilst maintaining the ball bearing’s inherent rotational performance.
ATD TOUGH
The ATD operates smoothly in response to the fish’s pull and maintains a consistent drag. The ATD TOUGH features carbon washers, delivering exceptional durability. Designed to prioritise smooth engagement and responsiveness, it allows you to concentrate on the fight without worrying about drag settings.
LC-ABS (Long Cast ABS)
Whilst retaining the ABS II design philosophy of reducing contact resistance, the contacts have been moved forward to achieve smoother line release. As the ring section protrudes further forward, the line is less likely to ride up onto the ring; this has resulted in a cast distance increase of approximately 5 per cent compared to the conventional ABS II, whilst also improving reliability. A next-generation ABS spool that delivers LC (LONG CAST).

G1 Duralumin MC (Machine-Cut) Tough Digi Gear
In addition to its high rigidity, the MONOCOQUE BODY (MQ) – which allows the drive gear to be enlarged to the absolute limit – is fitted with G1 duralumin MC (machine-cut) Tough Digi Gears, boasting 1.3 times the strength of ultra-high-strength duralumin. This synergy delivers formidable durability.
Thanks to the MQ body and large-diameter gears, it boasts exceptional ‘winding power’ and ‘gear strength’.

Manual Return
To completely prevent the bail from returning during casting and to improve durability, a manual return mechanism has been adopted which ensures the bail does not return when the handle is turned.
Rotor brakes
A mechanism that prevents the bail from unexpectedly snapping back by applying the brake to the rotor’s rotation when the bail is opened, thereby preventing the handle from moving due to the shock of the cast.

Body with no stoppers
The body structure has been simplified by removing the stopper. The decision to remove the stopper—which acts as a pathway for water and foreign matter to enter—not only enhances water resistance but also minimises the risk of sudden malfunctions that might otherwise occur when using the 23 SALTIGA 4000/5000/6000 in harsh environments or whilst fighting the Big One.
Handle
For the 4000/5000 size, which is primarily used for light shore casting and offshore fishing, a 65mm model has been adopted.

Aluminium Round Knob
For the 4000 size, which is primarily used for light shore casting and offshore fishing, an aluminium round knob (S size = Φ39 mm, compatible with S-size knobs) has been adopted.
For the 5000 size—which accommodates larger and heavier lures than the 4000 size—and the 6000 size, which is designed for targeting Big Ones, an aluminium round knob (L size: Φ42 mm, compatible with S size knobs) is used.
