A light jigging reel that combines outstanding drag performance with excellent winding performance.

The aim with the TIERRA LJ IC was to provide anglers with a Jigging reel offering unrivalled drag performance and winding performance.
The maximum Drag Force is rated at ‘10 kg’. It features a powerful drag system that is among the best in its class. Furthermore, this time we have focused not only on drag strength but also on ensuring smoother drag operation. This has been achieved through ATD, Synchro Level Wind and the ‘Electronic Drag Sound’ – a first for a hand-crank IC reel. The ‘Electronic Drag Sound’ is a function that detects spool rotation and signals drag engagement via an ‘electronic tone’.
By incorporating this feature, we have eliminated the physical resistance associated with the drag release mechanism (mechanical structure), thereby achieving a smooth, high-performance drag system that surpasses conventional designs. The powerful drag, with a maximum capacity of 10 kg, continues to operate smoothly.
Furthermore, its core performance has been refined through ‘HYPERDRIVE DESIGN’, building on the design of the SALTIGA IC 300.
It delivers high winding performance that allows anglers to tackle large bluefish with confidence, even in areas with strong currents or when using Jigs in the 300g class.

DAIWA Technology

HYPERDRIVE DESIGN
A next-generation design philosophy for Bait (two-axis) reels, which significantly raises the standard of all fundamental performance characteristics with the aim of ensuring that high initial performance is sustained over the long term. The Hyper Drive Design comprises up to four technologies. It requires the incorporation of the HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR, which ensures smooth rotation over the long term, alongside HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT, which assists gear drive to deliver powerful yet effortless winding. The HYPER ARMED HOUSING provides robust internal structural support, making it resistant to flexing and distortion. The HYPER TOUGH CLUTCH features an insulated structure that ensures continuous operation even in harsh environments, whilst drastically reducing seizure caused by salt build-up. The synergistic effect of these features ensures consistently stable performance across all fishing environments.
HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR
A newly designed gear system engineered to ensure consistently strong and smooth rotation. This is DAIWA’s proprietary technology, which achieves long-lasting initial smoothness by increasing the meshing ratio without reducing the module (size) of the gear teeth—a factor directly linked to durability.
HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT
A drive support system that ensures sustained smoothness whilst delivering winding power with effortless reeling. By supporting both ends of the pinion gear with two ball bearings to ensure high precision, it does not dampen the input from the handle, enabling powerful yet effortless winding even under load.
HYPER ARMED HOUSING (FULL AL)
A case system that firmly supports the internal structure with high rigidity and precision, delivering a refined winding feel and power. The use of metal for the frame—the core component—is essential; combined with the side plates and set plates, this ensures that the fundamental performance is maintained over the long term.
In this series, aluminium alloy has been used for the frame, side plate (handle side) and set plate. This has resulted in high winding performance that is on a par with the 21SALTIGA IC 300.
HYPER TOUGH CLUTCH
Not only does it offer crisp on-off performance capable of enduring thousands, even tens of thousands, of sliding cycles, but it is also a clutch system that experiences extremely few problems even in seawater with high salinity. Its cutting-edge insulation structure has already achieved a 99 per cent reduction in the number of repairs for seizing in harsh saltwater environments, compared to our previous models.
ATD
The ATD operates smoothly in response to the fish’s pull and maintains a consistent drag. Designed to minimise slippage and ensure excellent tracking, it allows you to concentrate on the fight without having to worry about drag settings.

Other Features

SYNCHRO LEVEL WIND
A mechanism whereby the level wind’s left-to-right reciprocating motion is synchronised with the spool’s rotation, both during the descent and reeling of the rig. Not only does this ensure the line remains neatly wound, but the movement during descent also facilitates a smooth descent of the rig.

‘Electronic Drag Sound’ is a function that detects Spool rotation and signals the drag’s operation via an ‘electronic sound’.
The conventional drag release click (mechanical mechanism) plays a vital role in conveying the drag’s operation to the angler. However, the ratchet mechanism inside the drive gear and the sound-emitting pin mechanism, which are designed to produce the sound, created physical resistance when the drag was released. By eliminating this mechanical mechanism and incorporating an ‘electronic drag sound’ system, it has become possible to achieve both smooth drag performance and a more audible drag sound.

The graph below compares the ‘resistance’ experienced when pulling out the drag between the TIERRA LJ IC and a reel fitted with a conventional drag-pull click mechanism. By significantly reducing this ‘resistance’, the TIERRA LJ IC delivers a smoother, high-performance drag. The powerful drag, with a maximum capacity of 10 kg, continues to operate smoothly, reducing the number of fish lost and providing an advantage when fighting large fish.

My first encounter with it was when I was given a prototype during a field test.
‘Same gear as the SALTIGA IC’, ‘aluminium frame’, ‘drag performance surpassing that of the SALTIGA IC’… I was given all sorts of explanations, but to be honest, I wasn’t holding my breath. This is because, with conventional low-profile reels, the body tends to flex, and their durability is hardly impressive. I believed that, for offshore jigging—where the reel is constantly exposed to harsh conditions—there were limits to what could be achieved, no matter how much the internal components had changed.
However, when I actually used it to hook a fish, yellowtail amberjack and yellowtail were reeled in with a smooth feel as they fought their way towards me; and when I loosened the drag slightly, an electronic beep sounded whilst the line was released cleanly, with absolutely no wobble in my grip or the rod tip. Towards the end of the test, the Drag Force proved strong enough to hold even a large mahata firmly on the bottom. It completely defied my expectations—I never imagined a compact reel could have evolved to this extent. Furthermore, despite fishing all day long, the compact body meant that fatigue in my fingertips and wrists was drastically reduced. It really is the all-in-one reel that’s needed for inshore fishing right now.

I used it in Ise Bay, my home waters, and the first thing that struck me was how ‘light’ it felt to reel in. The lightness of the initial movement when I started jigging, and the lightness of the reeling even under load, felt on a par with a round-frame reel.
