What I look for in a light jigging rod is a high-level fusion of comfort, manoeuvrability, sensitivity, power and torque. As light jigging involves using a variety of Jigs and Hooks depending on the conditions on the day, such a rod must fulfil a wide range of requirements. If one focuses solely on comfort, sensitivity suffers; if one prioritises power and manoeuvrability, the rod simply becomes too stiff. The reverse is also true. I wanted to create a dream rod that possessed all the necessary qualities—comfort, manoeuvrability, sensitivity, power and torque—to handle a wide range of situations and fishing grounds. Moreover, I aimed to create a rod that was not merely an extension of existing rods on the market, including those from DAIWA, but one with performance that stood head and shoulders above the rest—truly a ‘rod unlike any other’. I recall that this project was launched when I conveyed this vision and enthusiasm to DAIWA.

So, how do we go about creating the world’s finest light jigging rod? First of all, I held in-depth discussions with the planning team at DAIWA. We discussed what sort of rod we wanted, the direction we should take in its development, and what our ultimate goals should be. Following these discussions, we arrived at the following five key points: 1. The ultimate jigging feel (Comfortable)　2. The ability to manoeuvre the jig exactly as intended (manoeuvrability) 3. Hooking power 4. Torque during the fight 5. Reduced fatigue even during prolonged use (ergonomics). To achieve this, we decided to utilise the full range of DAIWA Technology and cutting-edge technology. Prime examples of this include the incorporation of technologies never before used in Jigging rods and the development of a new reel model. All of this is aimed at creating a light Jigging rod unlike any other in the world.

These rods are packed with meticulous attention to detail to achieve these goals, and I’d like to highlight the aspects where this attention to detail is particularly evident. Firstly, regarding the blanks, there are broadly two types: the Tubular & Solid Tip model and the Thrill Game model. Both utilise SVF Nano Plus (M40X) for the blank and MEGA TOP R (T1100G Solid) for the solid section. These technologies are being used in light Jigging rods for the very first time. Whilst increasing elasticity has boosted power and torque whilst achieving higher rebound and a slimmer profile, a rod that is simply full of tension is not to my taste. Based on my personal belief that a light jigging rod must offer a comfortable jigging feel—that is, comfort above all else—I remade the blank time and again in pursuit of the optimal action and taper. As a result, I have achieved a action that could be termed ‘Hybrid Response’, fusing the comfortable feel of a low-response rod with the power of a high-response rod. The finished blank has achieved a level of satisfaction in each of the five criteria mentioned above, which truly astonished me. It has turned out to be a rod that allows you to truly savour the essence of light Jigging.

Next up are the guides, which are among the most important components of a rod. We’ve adopted the AGS Type R for the guides themselves, and have also incorporated CWS into the threads that secure the AGS. Whilst previous jigging rods have featured AGS, this is the first to incorporate CWS. To assess the evolution of CWS, we fitted it to existing rods and conducted comparative tests. The difference was striking: the rod with guides secured using CWS clearly delivered superior performance. It was a difference so noticeable that you could tell just by jigging with your eyes closed. Needless to say, based on this experience, I had no hesitation in choosing the AGS Type R and CWS. A carbon blank with carbon guides and carbon thread. Not only is the performance outstanding, but it looks absolutely brilliant too!

And finally, we have the new ‘ZERO-SEAT Comfort Trigger’ reel seat, developed specifically for this Rod. Everyone has their own way of gripping the handle section, including the reel. Hand sizes vary, as do grip strengths. It also depends on the shape and size of the reel. Given the diverse and complex nature of the reel seat as a grip area, we have meticulously crafted its design to accommodate a wide range of holding styles. We placed particular emphasis on ensuring it remains comfortable even during prolonged use and is less likely to cause hand pain. With its smooth, minimal-texture design and a trigger that provides a firm grip without interfering with the hold, this reel seat has truly lived up to its name as the ‘Comfort Trigger’.

The number of field tests carried out was considerable, particularly when the development of the reel seat was taken into account. Testing was centred on the Toba area in Mie Prefecture, my home ground, and during these sessions I managed to achieve catch rates that astonished even those around me. I also made an expedition to Hachijōjima for the final test. I put the Rod through its paces with the aim of seeing just how far I could push it using light Jigging tackle, and I was able to land Amberjack and yellowtail as intended. Based on these results, I can confidently recommend this Rod for the power and torque it delivers.

There are all sorts of days when it comes to fishing. Of course, not every day is a good one. There are also difficult and challenging days. Furthermore, everyone has their own way of enjoying the sport and their own approach. Some aim to catch large numbers; others target big fish; some focus on their Jigging technique and the way the lure falls whilst constantly exploring new techniques; and others enjoy the predictability of adjusting to the ever-changing sea conditions moment by moment. In every case, the ‘comfortable jerking performance’, the excellent responsiveness to various techniques—the ‘manoeuvrability of the Jig’—and the ‘sensitivity and power’ that enable you to take on bluefish in head-to-head battles beyond your wildest imagination all support the angler’s fishing experience. Of course, there are times when the fish aren’t biting or when the going is tough, but even then, we want this to be a Rod that allows you to continue Jigging with confidence. The SALTIGA LJ EX is the embodiment of that vision. To achieve this, we’ve paid particular attention to the design. We’re proud to say that it’s a piece of tackle that catches the eye and truly stands out on FUNE. Fishing is a hobby, and the ultimate concept encompasses not only performance but also design. It may sound like I’m repeating myself, but we’ve now completed a Rod that surpasses even the very best! The level of craftsmanship is such that I can truly say this is my finest work yet!
