DAIWA’s unique waterproof design creates a barrier of magnetic oil between the body and the rotor to prevent the ingress of seawater, dust and other contaminants.
MONOCOQUE BODY
Robust and durable technology: the MONOCOQUE BODY. Conventional spinning reels typically featured a design in which the drive gear was supported at both ends by the body and the body cover, and secured in place with several screws. Aiming to further improve precision and rigidity, the MONOCOQUE BODY eliminates the body cover and instead secures a high-precision plate directly to the body by screwing it in. This has enhanced the precision with which the gears are supported, whilst also improving rigidity and airtightness. Furthermore, by utilising the space previously occupied by screws, we have succeeded in maximising the size of the drive gear to the absolute limit. The term ‘MONOCOQUE BODY’ derives from ‘MONO’ (one) and ‘COQUE’ (shell). This entirely new design, symbolising the resilience of a single-piece shell, shatters conventional wisdom regarding reel construction.
ATD
The ATD operates smoothly in response to the fish’s pull and maintains a consistent drag. Designed to minimise slippage and ensure excellent tracking, it allows you to concentrate on the fight without having to worry about drag settings.
TOUGH DIGIGEAR
To withstand harsh conditions, a reel needs a robust core to support it. ‘TOUGH DIGIGEAR’ ensures smoother rotation for longer.
AIRROTOR
The unique arched shape, which distributes the load on the rotor, achieves significant weight reduction whilst maintaining equivalent strength. It also improves rotor balance, resulting in light, responsive rotation.
LC-ABS (Long Cast ABS)
Whilst retaining the ABS II design philosophy of reducing contact resistance, the contacts have been moved forward to achieve smoother line release. As the ring section protrudes further forward, the line is less likely to ride up onto the ring; this has resulted in a cast distance increase of approximately 5 per cent compared to the conventional ABS II, whilst also improving reliability. A next-generation ABS spool that delivers LC (LONG CAST).
AIRBAIL
The smooth, seamless shape of the spool ensures the line flows seamlessly to the line roller, significantly reducing tangling issues. Furthermore, the hollow structure of the spool itself has enabled a substantial increase in strength without adding to its weight.

<4000–6000>
The handle knob is compatible with the S size. For the 4000 and 6000 sizes, which are primarily designed for shore casting, light offshore jigging, and light offshore jigging and casting, the EVA round Type Power Light Knob L is used (excluding the 5000-CXH).
<8,000–18,000>
The handle knob is compatible with size L. For the 8000–18000 size range, which is primarily used for offshore jigging and shore casting targeting big ones, an EVA large round knob is fitted.

Ideal for saltwater fishing where PE lines of 1.2 to 2 are primarily used, the 5000-CXH is fitted with an EVA round light knob of ‘just the right size’ that strikes a balance between power and precise control.
Rotor brakes
A mechanism that prevents the bail from unexpectedly snapping back by applying the brake to the rotor’s rotation when the bail is opened, thereby preventing the handle from moving due to the shock of the cast.
Manual Return
To completely prevent the bail from returning during casting and to improve durability, a manual return mechanism has been adopted which prevents the bail from returning when the handle is turned. (6,000–18,000)
Body with no stoppers
The body structure has been simplified by removing the stopper. The decision to remove the stopper—which acts as a pathway for water and foreign matter to enter—not only reduces weight and improves water resistance but also minimises the risk of sudden malfunctions that could occur when fishing in the harsh conditions and whilst battling the Big One, as required of the 22CALDIA SW.
Perfect line stopper
A new-design line stopper compatible with both fine lines, such as PE, and thicker lines, such as Leaders. Its horizontal shape saves space in the vertical direction and helps to reduce the weight of the Spool. (4000–6000)

2023 New Models: CALDIA SW 8000-P / 10000-P × Tonjigi / Tuna Jigging
The 8000 and 10000 sizes of the CALDIA SW range are set to be joined by the power gear models that jigging anglers have been eagerly awaiting.
I was one of the first to put the prototypes of the CALDIA SW 8000-P and 10000-P into action during the 2022–2023 Mie Tonjigi late winter to early spring season. I was able to thoroughly enjoy the latter half of the season, which was even better than usual.
Although I get the impression that most anglers tend to use Bait tackle for tonjigi, I actively use spinning tackle as well. There are broadly two main advantages to using spinning tackle for tonjigi.
Firstly, particularly during the spring season, there are often days when fish respond well to the rapid movement of Jigs. On such days, fast, rhythmic jigging using spinning tackle—which allows for a faster retrieve than Bait casting tackle—is by far the most effective approach.
And secondly—this is the key point. If you can position yourself at the bow or stern, you can use an undercast to cast the Jig away from the FUNE downwind whilst drift fishing.
In the ‘Dotera-nagashi’ technique—the standard method for tonjigi fishing—if you cast the jig directly in front of you, the FUNE is usually pushed by the wind, causing the jig to drift upwind and the line angle to increase progressively. However, by first using an undercast to place the jig as far downwind as possible, you can jig it in a relatively vertical manner for a longer period, making it easier to impart action to the jig. Furthermore, as this also enables you to target specific depths with greater precision (minimising the discrepancy between the Jig’s actual depth and the angler’s perceived depth), I find it to be a technique that significantly improves your catch rate. I would certainly encourage you all to give it a try whenever you find yourself positioned at the bow or stern of the FUNE.

Furthermore, as yellowtail are also likely to be caught when jigging, anglers often use ‘thick, long Fluoro leaders’, which are generally difficult to cast. Even in such cases, the CALDIA SW—equipped with LC-ABS (Long Cast ABS), a technology inherited from the SALTIGA—allows you to consistently cast the jig a long way by performing an undercast with the right amount of effort, without straining. An undercast performed with ‘excessive force’ increases the likelihood of casting problems due to wobble in the Jig, as well as wobble and twisting in the Rod; therefore, please ensure you cast with a relaxed shoulder.
Both the new CALDIA SW 8000-P and 10000-P feature a full-metal (aluminium) MONOCOQUE BODY and are equipped with a 4.9 Gear ratio. The ‘winding power’ resulting from the synergy of these features is also extremely impressive.

This makes it ideal for the ‘one-pitch jerk’ technique with heavy, long jigs, which is the standard method for tonjigi fishing. Furthermore, with this level of line capacity, you can feel confident even when a fine-sized yellowfin tuna in the 40–50 kg class takes the bait.
On the other hand, the 8000-P is fitted with a 75mm handle, which could be described as standard. I believe this reel is designed to make it easier to perform technical and rapid jerking actions—such as combination jerks—when targeting fish of a size that respond to relatively fast baits during small and medium weight baits, thereby attracting bites from a greater number of fish.
My recommended approach is to use the 10,000-P for Tane-ton (20 kg or more) and yellowfin tuna, and the 8,000-P when you’re catching mostly small to medium-sized Tane-ton (under 20 kg). I believe that using these two models according to the size of your target will lead to better results.
I’ve only used it for a single season myself, but the reel still has plenty of life left in it. Whilst I haven’t yet been able to test it to its absolute limits, one thing I can say for certain is that it offers ‘excellent value for money’, and I’d highly recommend it as a trusted companion for anyone looking to take up offshore fishing.

My first impression when I used this reel in a field test was one of ‘surprise’.
Although it falls within the mid-range price bracket, its basic performance is on a par with my main reels—the SALTIGA and CERTATE SW.
Firstly, the ability of the Long Cast ABS spool to prevent line tangles during casting.
During the four-day field test of the Hiramasa Casting, the fact that I was able to use it without a single casting issue was a major advantage in itself; moreover, its ability to deliver consistent casting distance proved to be a further asset. Whether into a tailwind or a headwind, I was able to deliver the lure to the intended area without any problems, and the peace of mind this provided was my first impression upon actually using it.
Next, the lightness and smoothness of the reeling.
Thanks to its full-metal (aluminium) MONOCOQUE BODY and large-diameter Tough Digi Gear, the reel offers light and smooth reeling when jigging and working plugs. This helps to reduce angler fatigue and maintain concentration during offshore fishing, where anglers often spend the whole day continuously working their lures.
And the winding power you use when a fish takes the bait.
In fact, I managed to catch a 20-kilo and a 15-kilo fish whilst casting, a 12-kilo fish whilst jigging, and numerous other yellowtail amberjack and yellowtail; even when faced with the fierce pull of a large yellowtail amberjack, the power provided by the all-metal (aluminium) MONOCOQUE BODY and the large-diameter Tough Digi Gear meant I was able to land the fish without letting it gain the upper hand.
Furthermore, thanks to the ATD system—which utilises carbon washers—the drag performance ensured that a consistent drag pressure was maintained on the fish, enabling a steady fight against large yellowtail amberjack.
When it comes to this ATD, its stable drag performance is a major asset when using relatively fine lines—such as for winter yellowtail Jigging in the Genkai Sea—even when battling large yellowtail weighing over 10 kilograms from deep waters.
Finally, the design.
With its gunmetal black base accented with gold, this sophisticated design is a truly satisfying finish that holds its own alongside the SALTIGA and CERTATE SW.

During the four-day field test of the Hiramasa Casting, the fact that I was able to use it without a single casting issue was a major advantage in itself; moreover, its ability to deliver consistent casting distance proved to be a further asset. In late autumn in Kita Kyushu, the reel I used for casting for large sea bream was the ‘CALDIA SW 14000-H’.
This reel offers outstanding ‘reeling lightness’ and ‘manoeuvrability’, and its gunmetal and black colour scheme looks really smart.
Firstly, regarding ‘the lightness of the reeling’.
